Angela, Vanessa and Carly are all Cranbrook Moms who love to sing. We met as members of the Cranbrook Community Choir. Our love for singing and passion for sharing that love with others led us to many discussions, which led us to building Mountain Song. We are excited for this new venture, and what we can dream and create together with this community we have come to love.
Vanessa Fer – Director, Music
Vanessa grew up playing in the forests and fields in the outskirts of Winnipeg, Manitoba. She received her education immersed in dance, musical theatre and was a dedicated member of a variety of choirs. Vocal study, dance and theatre arts kept Vanessa busy throughout her K-12 and university years. This passion led her to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in music (voice) and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Winnipeg. While living in the lower mainland of British Columbia, she completed all three Orff Schuwlerk levels and then completed her Master of Art Education degree at Simon Fraser University. Vanessa has been teaching music for almost 20 years. She has directed and performed in a variety of concerts, organized performance opportunities for children in and outside of school, as well as conducted both children and adult choirs.
Vanessa is married and has three children. She enjoys spending time playing outside with her family and friends.
Carly Benson – Director, Administration
Carly holds three Bachelor degrees because she just loves learning that much. She’s always tried to become her own person, but has gradually become her mother anyways. Carly loves to innovate, create and build community. She was on the creative team for the TELUS Spark Science Centre project in Calgary, AB, and was part of a collaborative team that started an adult community choir, “Cum Vino Cantus” in Calgary, AB. Carly and her husband live just out of town with their two kids, some chickens and a house she hopes to fill with art. She is the Music Teacher at Pinewood Elementary School.
Carly will be the main point of contact for Mountain Song.
Angela Freeze – Director, Administration
Angela got into music as a child through piano lessons, but didn’t start singing until university. Since then, she’s been a member of one choir or another as much as possible. As an engineer until she became a full time mom, creative expression through music provided balance to her life. Now, getting involved in community projects satisfies her enthusiasm for project management. Angela has been volunteering with kids as a Girl Guide leader for the last 10 years, sharing her love of learning, of being outside, and of singing around the campfire. She can often be found with her two kids and husband roaming the trails near Cranbrook.
